Blog Post 9: Field Research Reflections
The beginning of the research project was focused on invasive species and their contributions (both negative and positive) to the overall function of Turner’s Bog. The biggest hurdle to overcome was the lack of access into the bog, as it was surrounded by large thickets of blackberry. Thus, leaving me with unanswered questions such as
- Are there more patches of Ulex europaus within the heart of the bog?
- Would proper access have allowed me to conduct more transect samples?
- With proper access, could I have identified more wildlife, such as birds and ungulates? And if so, can I draw conclusions from it?
My results provided mere insight into the ecosystem composition of TB. The transect which contained Ulex.e (the only one) was also dominated by Rubus arm. — which challenges the hypothesis of “Do invasives outcompete native/ruderal species for space and resources?” Although further research would be needed. Overall, this project has helped my critical thinking skills regarding local flora and fauna. Specifically what role certain species play in the entirety of the ecosystem function.
