Field Observations

Date: June 3, 2022

Observer: Ziyi Yu

Duration: 11:00am to 3:30pm

Weather: Sunday

The diversity and the abundance of the species in Blue Mountain Hill were high on June. The observe area I choose were low and high altitude. Low altitude areas in Blue Mountain Hill are mostly flat, while high altitude areas are in the hill area, which takes a few minutes by car.

I observed in about 1m2 low altitude area, and it covered with trees and green plants without wasteland. The soil there is moist and firm with some stones and fallen leaves on it. In addition to abundant plants, there were also many animals such as birds, spiders and mosquitoes. I found that the Adiantum pedatum (Ferns) was common in the low altitude area. The abundance of the Humulus Japonicus (grass) was lower than the Adiantum pedatum obviously.

Low Altitude

After about two hours, we drive to the high-altitude area to observe. The area I choose was also about 1m2, which was good for the comparing with different altitudes. I noticed that the abundance of the species was lower than which I found in the low altitude, spatially Adiantum pedatum (Ferns). However, there were more Humulus Japonicus (grass) in the high altitude. I assumed that Humulus Japonicus (grass) adapted high altitude environment better than Adiantum pedatum (Ferns). The factors include the amount of water, oxygen and temperature.
