Post 5: Design Reflections

There were few difficulties in implementing quadrat haphazard sampling because the grass species in the field were very tall. It was also difficult to sample in the forest because the ground was uneven and there were very few open areas to sample from. The data collected on the abundance and species richness of wildflowers in different sunlight levels (e.g. full sunlight in the field vs. shade in the forest) were what I expected. I predicted that there would be a greater number of wildflower species and distribution in the field compared to in the forest. I plan to continue collecting data the same way by using haphazard and area based sampling, but will probably visit another forest to sample that is within walking distance from the other sampling areas. My response variable will remain categorial: presence or absence of species of flowers. I am still debating whether the predictor variable will also be categorial (presence or absence of sunlight) or continuous (level of incident light or percent of forest canopy) – I will have to decide on the metric to use for measurement and how feasible the data collection will be.
