Blog Post 1: Observations

A place in Chilliwack I frequently visit, a little house with its backyard situated on one side of the Chilliwack River; containing a garden of overgrown trees and bushes. The manmade structures are 30+ years old and have become hidden under thick brush. The house is located in the centre of the plot of land; it is fortunately on a raised bed as this area was flooded in the last year, the house was above the water level, but the yard was completely flooded. Why does it appear relatively unchanged? Why do the wild animals still actively wander through? How have the populations evolved to exist in an area with major weather extremes and disturbances?

The coordinates are (49.0786731, -121.8708764)

The initial visit was on August 9th, in the late morning, the temperature was warm and it was a humid day (I mean, all days are humid in the lower mainland). Being late August, you could see the apples developing in the tree and falling to the ground. Most birds were heard and not seen, a couple of smaller brown birds hopped along the ground picking at (what I assume are) bugs and seeds.

Many different flowers were blooming and the trees/bushes were flush with leaves.

Other animals with confirmed sightings are: raccoons, deer, frogs, Steller’s jay, crows, and squirrels.
