Blog Post 2: Sources of Scientific Information

A)

The source I have chosen is a book that I have previously used in field study and found to be quite useful. I believe it will be beneficial to the progress of my Field Research Project, and suitable as a source of ecological information.

Cannings, R., Aversa, T., & Opperman, H. Birds of British Columbia and the Pacific Northwest – A Complete Guide (2E). Toronto, Heritage House Publishing, 2020.

B)

This book is classified as non-academic material, due to the lack of in-text citations. It however does contain a bibliography and is written by experts in the field.

C)

The authors are experts in their field, with all having experience with birds of the pacific northwest area, as well as authoring various avian books and publications. The bibliography lists 25 publications/sources, with an index aiding in the ease of use of the book. The main pages of the book itself are dedicated to information on bird species, including photos & description, their status & distribution, habitat, behaviour, and vocalization. While there is no specific ‘reviewed’ section, the authors thank the many birders and biologists that provided information for the book. The book’s publisher, Heritage House Publishing, also publishes various reference books, suggesting that this book is a trustworthy source of information.
