Niagara College Lagoons (43° 9′ 2.0736” N79° 9′ 40.554” W)
The area that I have chosen to observe are two lagoons located at the Niagara College campus in Niagara-On-The-Lake, Ontario. Before these lagoons became property of Niagara College the land was used to accommodate for a nearby horse racing track, and before that it was used as farmland. This site is located at 135 Taylor road with the Queen Elizabeth Highway (QEW) located to the east, the Niagara escarpment located to its south, Taylor road to its west and Glendale avenue to its east. The topography of this site is fairly flat, with the escarpment located just to the south of it. Its vegetation is that typical of a lagoon ecosystem, there are many different grasses and trees that surround the perimeter of the lagoon. This site has many different bird species present (Canada goose, ducks, cranes), turtles, and other amphibians (snakes, frogs).
Additional Notes: Beehives nearby that are used for Niagara College program, Aboriginal garden nearby, bat monitoring stations located throughout the lagoons, designated turtle nesting sites throughout lagoon.
Potential subjects: species present in lagoon vs. escarpment.
Turtle population present in Lagoon 1 vs lagoon 2.
Changes to site and land uses over time, effects on environment.
