I have continued to observe my selected area. With six visits in total, I have a clearer understanding of some potential research subjects. The observations I have made thus far in my field journal have directed my interest towards the relationship between potential eutrophication, algae growth, and the proximity to the busy trail. However, I am still conceptualizing how I can collect and measure. Based on the readings, supplemental readings, and tutorials of Module 2, I understand I will likely need to expand my chosen area in order to fulfill the principles of independence, randomization, and replication for an effective field experiment. I should expand my observation and future data collection to other aspects of the lake, including an area that is farther from the busy trail, but with some public access, and another with limited access. The former is possible at the northmost aspect of the lake, and the latter on the west where a new fence has recently been placed. I predict that the proximity to humans and pets increases the presence of algae over other plant life, due to eutrophication.
Potential Hypothesis: Proximity to busy trails used by people and their pets increases the presence of algae suggesting eutrophication.
Response Variable: Algae growth
Explanatory Variable: Anthropogenic Eutrophication
Both are continuous and could be measured specifically by vegetation cover and pH
