Blog Post 1: Observations

I chose to do my field study at a nearby beach on the Pacific Ocean in White Rock, BC. The following are specific details about my chosen site:

Location: White Rock Beach

Coordinates: 49.0202323, -122.8039463

Approximate size: 10,000 m2

Topography: Flat

Vegetation: Pacific Coastal beach vegetation (driftwood zone with various grasses)

Designation: Public beach

Visited: September 26, 2022 at 9:00 am (early fall)

Weather: 14°C, partly cloudy, light wind

Tide: Medium-high

Potential subjects:

  • Seagulls
  • Ducks
  • Geese
  • Beach grass
  • Shrubs
  • Seaweed

Interesting questions:

  1. What effect(s) do the changing tides have on the amount of avian life in the area?
  2. Do the species of beach grass and shrubs vary at different locations along the beach?
  3. Are seaweed concentrations dependent on weather conditions?

Below are scans of my field journal observations as well as several sketches and an overhead view of the site.
