Blog Post 1: Comox Valley Backyard

Time visited: Afternoon of January 2, winter, cold and damp weather conditions

Due to recently moving, I have had to change my location. I will now be making observations in my backyard in the Comox Valley on Vancouver Island. It is 1 acre of land of mostly grass and the entirety of the area has a slight angle downwards towards my house. The perimeter consists of mostly douglas fir trees, but there are also a few cedar and maple trees. Due to the amount and the height of the douglas firs, the area only gets sunlight when the sun is at its highest point in the day.

Some potential research questions:

How do the species (insects/vegetation) vary from the low latitude points to higher latitudes?

What species of birds are the most prevalent in the area?

How do the douglas fir trees that are in close proximity to one another differ from those that are separated?
