Post 3: Ongoing Field Observations – Carolyn Francis – Colony Farms

  1. I intend to study the presence or absence of flora only the gradient of pack sand and gravel path, maintained flora, to untouched flora.
  2. With ongoing visits, I have begun to notice a difference in flora between the regularly mowed area and the unmoved flora directly beside it. While the grasses in the un-mowed areas are likely simply taller or more mature, there are dandelion greens, clovers, and clover flowers in the mowed area, and no mature plants are visible in the un-mowed area. Likewise, while no visible evidence in the mowed area, in the lusher banks I was able to see blooming pea flowers, cattails, and horsetails. There are blackberry bushes along the lush bank, while I have not spotted any shoots in the maintained area, I would expect to see them in the mowed area upon further observations.
  3. Potential Hypothesis: Along the gradient of the path, maintained to untouched flora, there will be an absence of non-adaptive plant species in the mowed areas.
  4. Response Variable: Categorical, Absence or Presence of Flora, Explanatory Variable: Continuous, regular mowing/anthropogenic stressors.
