- The initial data I collected was, in my view, a good practice round before collecting officially for the Final Research Project. Simply randomly generating between 15-100 paces, in retrospect is too few. I intend to instead randomly generate a number between 45 and 120 and walk for that many seconds instead. For the purposes of this exercise, I selected from whichever side was on my left (but because my generated steps were much less than expected, I did not turn around to select from the other side). With my determined adjustment for larger space between samples, I intend to continue with selecting from my left side. I will have to determine a control area. I will not use rulers next time and will go the route of using a square/quadrant made from PVC pipes. I immediately realized that counting what was within my sample area would not work when it came to grass. For this initial data sample, I calculated the area percentage, this was time-consuming and perhaps not realistic when I have significantly more replicates. I am leaning towards simply recording the presence or not. This was an excellent learning experience.
- Response Comment to: Blog Post 3: Field Observations – zhenriks – October 18, 2022. As someone who also had to switch their observation area due to unforeseen circumstances, I admire your ingenuity! My first thought, a your post was from two weeks ago, is curiosity of how our recent rainstorm after the drought affected your planters! You may have to plan for potential future abnormal weather. I also wonder how planting wildflowers outside the growing season will impact your research. Reading through your post, some other variables I encourage you to think about is: potential differences in light from the canopy cover, potential weed growth, and if you’ll replace the top soil or remove fallen leaves in your two experimental planters. Your initial hypothesis seems good for this point. I like how it is flexible, but also directed enough to build from.
