Virtual Lab using Different Sampling Strategies

Blog 4

I sampled the Mohn Mill site using area-based methods. I chose the site at random and chose area based because I thought it would be interesting to report on. However, I did go and play around with distance measurements for fun!

Error Percentages

Systematic Percent Errors:

Most common:

  • Red Maple: 0.00091%
  • Witch Hazel: 0.0013%

Least Common:

  • American Basswood: 0.057%
  • Yellow Birch: 0.31%

Random Percent Errors:

Most common:

  • Red Maple: 0.00039%
  • Witch Hazel: 0.0010%

Least Common:

  • American Basswood: 0.017%
  • Hawthorn: 0.0056%

Haphazard Percent Errors:

Most common:

  • Red Maple: 0.0022%
  • Witch Hazel: 0.0032%

Least Common:

  • American Basswood: 0.043%
  • Sweet Birch: 0.023%

Times:

Systematic: 15.75 hours

Haphazard: 13 hours

Random: 13.5 hours

The fastest sampling time was the haphazard technique, and it was also the most accurate. The accuracy definitely changes with species abundance. The least common species were typically bigger percentages than the more abundant species. The only exception was the Hawthorn sampling from the Random percent data.
