Dickinson M, editor. 1999. Field Guide to the Birds of North America, Third Edition. Washington (DC): National Geographic Society.
I was somewhat surprised to find this book is non-academic material, though still useful. It fails all three tests given in the tutorial for determining whether something counts as academic material. There are no in-text citations, it does not cite sources except to credit artists and being a corporate effort it’s hard to tell what parts were written by experts. I reviewed several other field guides and found them to be similar. Field guides will be an important aid for species identification, but for creating academic material I should make sure to find academic material to cite regarding things like species range or size distribution.
