Post 1 – Observations

Hi Everyone,

April 3rd, 2023.

Weather 7 degree Celcius

Temperature Sunny partly Cloudy.

Vancouver Island University, Nanaimo, British Columbia, Canada.

Studying the ecosystem of Vancouver Island University on a certain elevation, focusing on salal (Gaultheria shallon)and daphne vegetation, would involve an ecological examination of the relationships between the living and non-living components of the environment. I will be Studying the ecology of Salal and Daphne vegetation on Vancouver Island University’s campus, research may focus on factors such as soil composition, temperature, and Resistance factors from certain infections, which can all influence the distribution and abundance of these species. My Research may also examine the interactions between salal and daphne and other plant and animal species in the ecosystem, such as pollinators, herbivores, and predators that can make a difference in their abundance and chances of survival.

Interesting Questions:

  1. How does the elevation of the study site influence the distribution and abundance of salal and daphne plants? And to know if there any specific elevation ranges where these species are most commonly found?

  2. How do these species contribute to nutrient cycling, soil stabilization, and other important ecological processes?

  3. Is it possible to see one of these species being dominant on other in terms of survival.                                                           Figure 1. Below given are some of the pictures I clicked when going around the university campus to allocate proper site to conduct research and denotes about the elevation I need to conduct my research.

  1. Hi and welcome to the field project. If you look back at the instructions for this post it should include a description of your study site including its size, location, topography and types of vegetation that are present. You will get more into choosing a specific topic in the next couple of modules. Vancouver Island University campus is not an ecosystem, but likely has various ecosystems within it with various levels of alteration.
