Post 9: Field Research Reflections

There were challenges to this field project such as choosing a concise study topic. I changed my project ideas often, which caused some delays and confusion. It took me a long time to decide on a final hypothesis as it changed as I received feedback and learned more about the process of ecological research. I found it challenging to decide how to show my results statistically and determine how to complete the required calculations. All the calculations in my final report took a long time and a lot of effort before I was confident in them. Also, I am currently in the process of finishing up my discussion and writing the discussion section has been difficult, as it was challenging to interpret and compare my data to existing literature. Although the results of the ANOVA test showed my findings are statistically significant the findings are not all evident in the existing literature as many other factors may be at play as well.

In terms of what went well, once I became familiar with the process, measuring the tree’s length and width and moss coverage went smoothly. Although it was very time-consuming I found it enjoyable as I was required to spend a lot of time outdoors in a quiet forest. Once the decision of the final project was decided I found that the choice of methods became clear and worked well to receive the results of my project. My project was based on a topic I personally find interesting which made it much more enjoyable and engaging.

Moving forward, I would consider studying additional environmental factors along with sunlight and elevation. I would look at other abiotic and biotic factors that may have an impact on my results. Overall, I gained a greater appreciation for the ecological process and the challenges that come with conducting research in this field. By reflecting on both the successes and challenges of this project, I can take what I learned and apply it to future research projects. Although there are aspects I want to expand on in future research and there were certainly challenges, overall, I am very happy with my field research project.
