Post 5: Design Reflections

Difficulties: There were several difficulties in the process of collecting data. Because it was a visual count of the number of buds and flowers, some errors could occur. And some of the branches and leaves of these bean plants are entwined, sometimes it takes patience and time to determine which plant the buds and flowers belong to. In addition, there could be errors in the number of buds because the size and growth progress of the buds vary. However, to address this problem, I set a standard for counting buds: only those that are visually distinguishable as buds and are red colored are counted as one bud. This method can reduce the error to some extents. Finally, due to regional restrictions, the results from this sample can only be applied to this region and cannot be generalized to all bean plants.

Data collected: Most of the data conformed to the hypothetical expectations during the collection process. However, a few plants in the group showed an excessively low number of buds and flowers. Based on my observations, this may be because they are close to the wall, surrounded by a circle of plants, sometimes sunlight is blocked by the leaves of the plants in front of them, and because of its limited growing area, it does not absorb nutrients as efficiently as other plants, thus leading to their low growth rate. However, this still needs to be verified by subsequent experiments.

Sampling technique: Considering my experimental design, that the length of sunlight exposure is divided into three groups; and the practical difficulties which could be managed to some extents. I decided to continue using this sampling strategy.

  1. I’m still not clear how your three groups were created and those numbers of sunlight confirmed.

Beans are a difficult one because they intertwine and the growth of one plant could impact another plant growing close by, this should be addressed in your paper in terms of independence of your samples.
