  1. Study organism – Impatiens walleriana (Busy lizzy/ Patience Plant)
  2. I have chosen four different spots for Impatiens walleriana outside my work to observe. The environmental gradient I am going to observe for this plant is exposure to sunlight.

Spot no. 1 – sunlight all day

Spot no. 2 – sunlight after 9 am

Spot no. 3 – sunlight 11am to 5pm

Spot no. 4 – sunlight 2pm to 7pm

  1. Hypothesis – The number of flowers on Impatiens walleriana is affected by the amount of sunlight it receives.

Prediction – Impatiens walleriana plants that receive more sunlight will produce more flowers.

  1. Response variable – Number of Impatiens walleriana flowers

Explanatory variable – Amount of sunlight

  1. Hi there,

For your explanatory variable, the amount of sunlight, how do plan to measure that variable? Since it is quite a subjective measurement, and less “exact”, how do you plan to counteract that for your stat analyses/results?

Also, it is a little unclear from this post if your study site it contained within that one garden or if it’s different areas. I mention this because the quality of soil (moisture, nutrients) may vary between gardens and may affect your results as confounding variables.

    Great post!
