I am studying an area close to my apartment, the vegetation is a grassland with few trees, shrubs and plants with yellow flowers scattered around. The area isn’t fully flat, there are few indentations in the ground forming not so high hills and not so deep valleys.

It is an open space in between the University of Manitoba Fort Garry campus and my apartment at 2525 Pembina Highway, Winnipeg, MB, R3T6H3, QRXW+X6C Winnipeg, Manitoba (49.7999379, -97.1544797). It is approximately 1617 km size.

I visited the site on Saturday 19th August 2023, the weather was 27 degree Celsius and sunny.

Potential subjects I found in the area are the grass covering about 95% of the land, the few trees and surrounding shrubs, the yellow flowers growing amidst the grass. As at the time I visited there were no birds in the air and the trees are not sturdy enough for them to build nests. I expected to see a few squirrels but I didn’t find any, I did see a goose relaxing at the edge of the vegetation close to the pedestrian walkway.

Some potential questions for my research project are:

  • what type of animal species are present, where is their habitat and what do they feed on?
  • What are the differences between the types of trees located in this area (leaf shape & colour, size of branches, etc)?
  • What are the flowers found growing amidst the grass, are they weeds?
  • Why are there few trees, were they planted for aesthetic purposes or the area has always been scanty?
