End of the project

This project started out as a relatively straight forward concept and developed into something more than I expected. I could have chosen many easier subjects in my area but I choice to continue with the ID of observing bird species because I believe it is important to document species and influence of environmental differences and potential sources of disturbance. I had issues at moments with the implementation. Specifically it was difficult for me with my work schedule to find a period of study that worked. There proved to be 27 different bird species throughout the four sites which meant I had to ID those birds. There were moments there were additional birds that flew away to quickly to be ID or documented but that was usually when there was a disturbance. Overall I was happy with how the research project went. Reflecting back it would have been better to sample over a longer period and maybe study bird species in the areas at different times of the year.

  1. Hi Angela
I know you have been working hard on this and I will be looking for your paper!
Yes birds can be tricky. Luckily we have some tech aids now, like MerlinBirdID, that help with sounds (I find Merlin to be about 80% accurate – sometimes misidentifies species, and sometimes misses species – not in sound range, I guess).
often bird census people will go out in the field for pre visits to acclimatize themselves before surveying. A suggestion for Improving Future studies!
