The area I have selected is FortWhyte Alive in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Specifically, I would like to focus on the lakes at FortWhyte. These lakes have a history of being mined for clay and over the years have turned into something special. The lakes are approximately 7-10m in depth and I propose an experiment comparing three lakes (Lake Muir, Lake Muir and Lake Three). FortWhyte Alive is a privately owned reclaimed preserve used for recreation and environmental education. I visited this site three times in mid-September, the weather varied from cloudy to sunny.
- Does aeration make a real difference between lakes? Lake Muir and Devonian are aerated whereas Lake Three is not.
- Which lake has the highest levels of phosphorus and nitrogen and why?
- Which lake is the best for plant growth?
Since I work with FortWhyte Alive, I have the ability to gather water samples and run my own analysis on them. I’m very curious to know what the outcome will be!
That sounds like a great study site and it is very exciting they can run samples for you! How large are the lakes and what are the plant communities like around the lake? Did you see any animals? I look forward to seeing your next few posts and how your question narrows down.
