I have chosen the book ‘Luschiim’s Plants : A Hul’q’umi’num (Cowichan_ Ethnobotany’ as one of the sources of ecological information I will need to conduct my research study. The book acts as both a field guide to the plants of the Pacific Coast of BC, and to local indigenous knowledge and history. The book is well illustrated and will assist in identifying the plants species in my study site.
The final page of the book ‘About the Authors’ notes the book was written by two experts in the field, one of which is an Indigenous Elder, with an honorary Doctorate, and the other a Distinguished Professor Emerita from the University of Victoria. The book is written almost in the form of an illustrated memoir, such as you might walk through a forest with a local guide and they teach you about the plants you see along the way and their traditional uses. As such, there are very few references cited in the text, and only two citations are for journal articles, one of which is a self-citation, and both of which are quite old (1960 and 1992). The book has not been reviewed prior to publication. The book is borderline ‘non-academic material’ and ‘non peer-reviewed academic material’ – it is tricky.
