I went to Willowband Creek Park in Abbotsford, BC. The City park is flat wetlands with a walking path looping around the two ponds. The park is around 100 acres in size, and located in the Fraser River floodplain, and the area floods frequently. I visited during the winter and it drizzled during my visit to the park and much of the landscape was waterlogged and muddy.
Questions I had after my observations:
- I noticed that most of the terrain is covered with Phalaris arundinacea (reed canary grass) which is invasive to the area. What is the impact of this invasive species on the surrounding vegetation?
- I noticed that cornus sericea also known as red osier dogwood grew in small clumps and were dotted around the entire park. My question is why do they grow in such small clumps though there are many of these plants?
- I also saw a few trees that had been chopped down by beavers. I’m curious if they prefer certain species of trees or if it has more to do with the size of the trunks.
