My field data collection took place in Christmas Hill Sanctuary and analyzed the distribution and height variation of Garry Oak trees at different elevations. Firstly, I divided the hill into 4 transects horizontally with each transect being 10m in elevation. As Christmas Hill is a protected area and I couldn’t veer too far off the path, I used the convenience sampling method. In each transect, I selected five random locations close to the walking path to place a 5m x 5m quadrat. In each quadrat, the number of Garry Oak trees were counted and were further divided into two categories: 1) those measuring over 2.5m in height, and 2) those measuring less than or equal to 2.5m in height. This process was repeated for the other 3 transects. In the end, 20 quadrats were sampled, and data collected.
As Christmas Hill is a protected area, I was restricted to only using convenience sampling as it complies with staying mainly on the walking path. With that being said, my results should be considered with caution as the sampling method used may not reflect the entire region.
