Blog Post 1: Observations

The location which I have chosen for my Field Research Project is Mount Douglas Beach in Victoria, BC. The beach is northeast-facing facing with a hill of shrubbery and trees protecting it. The layers moving away from the water are small rocks, sand, timber, and large rocks at the base of the hill, then greenery up the hill including vines, shrubs and trees. The section of beach which I am focussing is approximately 100-200 metres in size but the entire beach stretches a length of 500 metres and connects with other beaches along the coast.

The initial observations were taken at 13:23 on 16/2/24 when it was sunny with few clouds and little wind. The weather was mild at 4C for winter.

Potential study subjects could be the interactions between the layers of greenery on the hill, from the vines on the ground to the shrubbery in the middle and the trees above. I could study how the layers impact each other and how organisms move between them. I could study the impacts of humans on the ecosystem as humans and their pets frequent the beach if wildlife is pushed back. The growth of moss was interesting, I could study the places in which it grows, how it reacts to the weather, temperature, humidity, etc. and the locations in which it grows, including the compass side (east vs west, etc.).
