Plog 5: Design Reflections

There was one complication after implementing the sampling strategy. My original sample locations stated the bird feeders would be placed at 6 ft and 20 ft from the privet hedge. However, the branches at these measurements weren’t thick enough to support the bird feeders.  Different branches were picked which altered the original measurements of the bird feeders’ locations from the privet hedge. Bird feeder 1 is now located 4.2 ft from the privet hedge. Bird feeder 2 is now located 17.8 ft from the privet hedge.

I attached the bird feeders on February 18th and began my observations on February 19th. I was surprised there were no Black-capped chickadees present in the first few days. This could have been because of the new human activity in their area affected their behaviour. Another possible reason for this is the weather patterns. The first few days were colder than the others where there was seen bird activity. Perhaps the birds conserved their energy in the colder temperatures and remained in a safe shelter.

I made modifications to my sampling methods by placing the bird feeders on thicker branches. This affected the original experimental design where the feeders would be located at 6 and 20 ft. The new location will provide more stability to the bird feeders and prevent the branches from breaking in any strong winds.
