Overall, designing and implementing a field experiment was a fun process that was different than what I’m used to in most classes. The only issue that arose with my experiment was the weather and temperatures. The squirrels were not active in very low temperatures and we experienced a number of snowstorms and lows this year which delayed my data collection. One change I made to my experimental design was changing my predictor variable to categorical instead of a continuous variable. This made it easier to quantify my data overall. If I conducted this experiment again, I would definitely include another study area to account for variation in space. I would also collect data in the summer and winter months to see how they compare. I found the course overall to be very engaging and helped me understand ecological theory in a different way than just in the classroom. I have completed field work previously, and this class was another good experience in understanding how complex designing and implementing a field experiment can be. There are numerous things to consider when designing a field experiment and it takes a lot more time than one would think. To conclude, I enjoyed this course immensely as it gave me a greater understanding of ecology as a whole.
