Post 6: Data Collection

During my field sampling in Fullerton Creek, I have encountered a mix of progress and challenges as I delve into the dynamics of the fish population. The progress made so far includes the successful completion of multiple sampling days, where I conducted visual surveys to count and record the number of fish in each of the three pools I am focusing on. These surveys have provided valuable data on fish population numbers, sizes, and distribution within the creek. Additionally, I have collected rainfall data over specific periods to correlate with our observations of fish populations.

On the other hand, challenges have also presented themselves during the fieldwork. One notable challenge has been the variability in weather conditions, which can impact the creek’s water levels and clarity. For instance, on the fourth sampling day, heavy rain led to murky water with low visibility, making it difficult to accurately count fish. This highlights the need for flexibility and adaptation in the field, as natural conditions can be unpredictable.

Another challenge has been the presence of wildlife that may disrupt the sampling process. Encounters with coyotes and mallards have required caution and adjustment of sampling locations to ensure safety and minimize disturbance to the ecosystem. Additionally, navigating the terrain and ensuring accurate data collection amidst the creek’s diverse habitats has been a constant consideration.
