Reflections: As my field research in Riverside Park comes to a close, it’s time to reflect on the journey I’ve embarked on. From designing my experiment to meticulously collecting data and analyzing the results, the process has been both challenging and rewarding.
Implementation Challenges: During the implementation phase, conducting field research in cold weather presented significant challenges. The harsh conditions affected both bird behaviour and my comfort, making it difficult to adhere to the original experimental plan. Additionally, my initial hypothesis was flawed and did not account for the complexities of the ecosystem. With guidance from my professor, Nancy, I refined my hypothesis and adapted the research design accordingly. We implemented new protocols for data collection and analysis. Despite these challenges, my efforts helped minimize discrepancies in data collection and ensure the reliability of my results.
Design Modifications: Throughout the course of my research, I found it necessary to make several modifications to my experimental design. For instance, I initially planned to conduct point counts in four distinct habitats within Riverside Park. However, logistical constraints and time limitations forced me to streamline my approach and focus on three key habitats instead. While this adjustment simplified my data collection process, it also prompted me to reevaluate my sampling strategy and ensure its effectiveness in capturing the diversity of bird species within the park. And also, I was going to observe behaviour as well but Nancy suggested that would be difficult and I changed it to only bird counts and the proximity to the river.
Ecological Insights: Engaging in the practice of ecology has profoundly altered my appreciation for how ecological theory is developed and tested. Through firsthand experience in the field, I’ve come to understand the complexities and nuances of ecological processes in ways that textbooks and lectures could never convey. My interactions with the natural environment have deepened my appreciation for the interconnectedness of all living organisms and the delicate balance that sustains life on Earth.
Conclusion: As I conclude my field research journey, I am filled with a sense of accomplishment and gratitude. Despite the challenges and uncertainties I encountered along the way, the experience has enriched my understanding of ecology and inspired me to continue exploring the wonders of the natural world. Moving forward, I carry with me not only the data I’ve collected but also the invaluable lessons learned from my time in Riverside Park. With each field research endeavour, I inch closer to unravelling the mysteries of the natural world and forging a deeper connection with the ecosystems that surround me 🙂
