Sampling Strategies

The three sampling strategies; (1) haphazard, (2) random sampling, (3) systematic, were used on the virtual forest, Mohn Mill Natural Area. Systematic had the fastest sampling time compared to haphazard and random sampling.

The two most common species were Red maple and White Oak, and the two rarest species were hawthorn and black cheery.

Table of Percent Error:

Sampling Method Red Maple White Oak Hawthorn Black Cherry Mean percent error
Haphazard 2.18% 16.1% 44.4% 233% 73.9%
Random 2.45% 25.9% 6.7% 40% 18.7%
Systematic 6.3% 8.7% 100% 100% 53.75

The percent error is much lower with more species abundance compared to lower species abundance. From the data I collected, random sampling was the most accurate according to the mean percent errors
