I did my sampling on the Snyder-Middleswarth Natural Area using area-based sampling, using random, haphazard, and systematic sampling strategies. For me, systematic sampling gave me the fastest time, 13 hours and 47 minutes. Random sampling took 14 hours and 7 minutes, and haphazard sampling took 13 hours and 58 minutes. Based on my results, White Pine and Eastern Hemlock were the most common species.
Random sampling (%) | Haphazard sampling (%) | Systematic sampling (%) | |
White Pine | 5.2 | 6.7 | 121 |
Eastern Hemlock | 11.2 | 25.6 | 9.6 |
Red Maple | 10.4 | 4.6 | 22.1 |
Striped Maple | 69 | 78.7 | 156 |
Figure 1: Error percentages for each species using the three sampling methods.
Based on my results, the level of accuracy is directly related to the abundance of each species. This is shown because the most common species (White Pine and Eastern Hemlock) also had the lowest error percentages.
