Post 1: Observations – Agrim Dogra

The area I chose to study was my backyard. It is located in a suburban neighbourhood in Maple Ridge, BC. The backyard is mostly flat, bordered by a wooden fence and is about 50 feet wide. I visited the yard on June 6th, 2024, at noon. It was a warm day with the weather reaching around 26˚C. There was a very slight breeze and no clouds were seen in the sky. With it being late spring, the flowers were in full bloom. There were a handful of different birds that would stop by and then fly away. The yard is filled with a cherry plant, peach tree, apple tree, plum tree, red pear plant, lavender flowers, and a hostass plant. Most of them are very young and still growing.

Questions:

  1. How does the presence of shrubs affect the biodiversity of insects in different areas of the backyard?
  2. What is the impact of different watering scheduling on the growth and health of vegetable plants in the garden?
  3. What is the impact of sunlight exposure on the flowering patterns of the plants?
