Post 7: Theoretical Perspectives

My research project aims to investigate the factors affecting plant species diversity and health in Edworthy Park’s riparian zones. This study revolves around understanding the  balance between natural ecological processes and human impacts on these ecosystems.

My research is based on the idea that environmental conditions change gradually over space, affecting which plants can grow and how healthy they are. Specifically, we’re looking at how close plants are to the Bow River. We expect that being near the river helps boost the variety and health of plants. This is because areas next to rivers, known as riparian zones, are usually rich in nutrients and water, and they offer unique places for plants to thrive.

Hypotheses and Processes Under Investigation
Influence of Proximity to the Bow River:

Hypothesis: Plant species diversity and health will be highest closer to the Bow River.

This hypothesis looks into nutrient cycling, hydrology, and ecological system near rivers. The presence of water from the Bow River likely supports a rich array of plant species by providing essential nutrients and consistent moisture levels, which enhances reproductive and evolutionary capabilities of the species living near it.

Impact of Human Recreational Activities:

Hypothesis: Plant species diversity and health will be lowest in areas with high human activity, such as parking lots, and moderate in areas with recreational activities, such as picnic sites.

This hypothesis examines disturbance and human-plant interactions. Recreational activities often compact the soil, reduce vegetation cover, and introduce invasive species, all of which can adversely affect plant health and biodiversity. By investigating these impacts, we can better understand how human activity modifies natural ecological processes.
