Reflections on Field Study

I throughly enjoyed completing my field study. I was lucky enough that my original experimental design worked well, and I did not have to make any modifications. It was quite interesting to see how diversity can change within a small range, within an ecosystem that seems to be uniform. While doing research, I found that a lot of authors who performed similar studies emphasized the importance of plant diversity patterns and conservation of mountain ecosystems, and ecosystems in general. A lot of studies also highlighted the negative effects of climate change on mountain ecosystems and how these ecosystems are particularly sensitive. I think that I have become much more aware of how my actions can have a negative impact on the environment, and I want to strive to be more conscious and do more research on how I can engage in conservation efforts. For a lot of people, it can be easy to lose sight of the fact that many plant and animal species are endangered and that vital ecological processes are being disrupted as a result of our choices, including ones like transportation, water consumption, and plastic use, to name a few. After completing this field work, I’ve found a new appreciation for how complex and dynamic ecosystems really are. I’m impressed by how much ecologists can understand through observation and testing, and develop specific ecological theories.
