Design Reflections – Jessica Livingston

With the sampling in the Bur Oak forest, there were a few hick ups. Firstly I had to change my idea from sampling species on three different elevations to staying in the highest elevation due to the frequent flash floods experienced this year with record rainfalls. Now I have switched to sampling species in a 4-foot radius of Bur Oaks testing the species abundance and effect on overstory and shrub stories. I was originally going to collect the floor level but due to the sheer abundance of species, it took too long in terms of time. With the data I gathered there was nothing that stuck out as surprising in any way. I think I will continue to sample in this way collecting the species in a 4-foot radius and only looking at the shrub and overstory as their root systems would be deep enough to be affected. I have chosen five sections in the forest to take random samples to increase time efficiency.
