Central Park is a 86 hectare urban forest park in the middle of Burnaby City, BC. The park is named after Central Park in New York City, reflecting its location in a dense urban area and its expansive size.It features flat winding paths, ponds, garden, with lively areas for special events, sports and games.

  • Central Park is renowned for its Douglas fir, western red cedar, and hemlock trees. Other vegetation includes weeds such as shepherd purse, sword ferns, cascade barberry, and rowan berries. This can be seen in the photos below.
  • There are several ponds within the park, often home to ducks, geese, and fishes. Other animals seen in this park also includes birds, bees, and squirrel.
  • The park has numerous well-maintained walking, jogging, and cycling trails, with many looped routes. Some paths are paved, while others are dirt trails through the forest. It also includes tennis courts, a pitch-and-putt golf course, and outdoor swimming pools. The park is also adjacent to Swangard Stadium, a small multi-purpose stadium used for soccer, track and field, and community events.
  • Central Park has designated picnic spots and playgrounds for children. There are also open lawns and fields for picnics and casual recreational activities.
  • Throughout the park, you will also see public art pieces, and exercise equipments.

Three Questions for Research Paper

  1. How does urbanization impact the ecosystem at this park?
  2. Does Central Park help reduce green gases emission or air quality in urban environments?
  3. Are human recreational spaces in Central Park beneficial or does it negatively impacts the natural habitat and wildlife?
