Blog Post 6: Data Collection

Data collection is going well so far. I am looking at bird diversity and density in two locations with three types of fruit trees in my backyard to determine whether the type of fruit tree affects the number and diversity of birds that visit it. In order to collect data, I am using point counting stations and data collection periods of 15 minutes per station. The sampling stations are roughly the same size (two trees each). I have sampled each station (two fruit tree locations) over 10 different days between 9:00 and 10:00 am for a total of 10 replicates. So far I have observed a greater number and diversity of birds in the northeast corner trees (peach and pear) compared to the southeast corner trees (two varieties of plum) which is what I expected given that the pear and peach trees are older, more established fruit trees and therefore provide potentially sweeter fruit. It is late spring/early summer here in Australia, so the season is perfect for bird diversity.
