Blog Post 5: Design Reflections

At first, I tried to use 3 different measurement methods to get the species richness of each moss. However, in practice, because I was in a plain area and the wind was strong, I couldn’t do Line Intercept well by myself. And Point Quarter Sampling was troublesome to implement.

In addition, I found that the distribution of moss communities was very uneven and varied in size. Some communities were as big as a palm, while others were as small as a coin. This made me realize that just counting the number of communities could not accurately reflect the species richness. And because mosses sometimes grow on stones or in cracks in the ground, I plan to add a visual measurement part to the experiment to reflect the actual number of species.

    1. I used quarter sampling instead of point quarter sampling because some moss species are so rare and often gather in one place that point quarter sampling may not be able to collect data on them.
