Sources of Scientific Information

The article I have chosen is called Ecosystem Experiment Reveals Benefits of Natural and Simulated Beaver Dams to a Threatened Population of Steelhead  (Oncorhynchus mykiss). As the title suggests, this article discusses the influence that beavers and beaver dams have on the freshwater production of steelhead (Oncorhynchus mykiss).

This article is classified as academic, peer-reviewed research material. I came to the conclusion this paper was academic because it includes bibliographies, in-text citations and was written by authors who are educated and experienced in related fields such as fish and wildlife departments, watershed and fisheries science, and ecological research. Under the acknowledgments section of the paper it states “We thank Peter McHugh and Stephen Bennett for their reviews. We also would like to thank four anonymous reviewers for their constructive criticisms” which proves it was infact peer-reviewed. Since this is discussing research that was conducted by the authors and includes the methods and results of the field study, I can conclude that it is a research paper.

  1. Hi Robyn,

Good to see this Bouwes article here, I am actually working on some projects installing beaver dam analogues in southwestern Alberta. We have referenced this article many times in permitting applications and in dialogue with stakeholders etc. Cool stuff. I presume you are interested in beavers and fish in some way, given your choice of article.

    Cheers,

    Elliot

  2. hey there, apologies but I am still learning this platform, I incorrectly atrributed your post as being authored by Robyn Reudink, but now I see that is the open learning faculty member, not the author!
