Sampling Strategies

The 3 sampling strategies used in the tutorial were:

  • Systematic
  • Random
  • Haphazard

The fastest estimated sampling time was done in the systematic sampling. Comparing the percent error of the most commonly found species and the rarest species, there was a greater percent error for the rare species than that of the commonly seen species. With species abundance, the accuracy increased which is why the percent error of the popular species was more accurate. From the true measurements compared to estimated values the most accurate values were reflected in the haphazard sampling, however for some measurements, systematic was the most accurate. Overall, haphazard sampling showed the most accuracy in sampling.

  1. You got the key points, missing a few details. While one is faster, usually they are all pretty close meaning you may save time with systematic sampling, but not much. Which species were rare and how inaccurate were the measurements?
