St.Vital park

Hello, I am Kazi Sadia Sultana and I reside in Winnipeg, Manitoba. For this project, I decided to go with St. Vital park . It’s 10 mins away from my place and is one of my favourite park to go to during summer. This park is flat with 0 elevation and is 100 acres in size. It  is known to be the third largest park in Winnipeg. This City park is curving alongside a bend in the red river and is largely forested. However,  the park is now covered by snow due to winter season. I visited the park on March 10,2023 around 2:30PM and the weather that day was cloudy with a temperature of -3 degree Celsius but felt like -9 degree Celsius. I noticed lots of squirrels and some birds during my visit.

Three questions that are interesting from the subject of my research project:

  1. What was the red fruits/seeds I saw in some trees? Is it a seed or fruit? Is it edible ?
  2. During my visit I noticed animal poops in certain area . What other animal is in the area? Will there be any difference in the vegetation observed ? Will there be any change in  nutrient availability in those areas when compared to the other areas in the park?
  3. What is the composition of squirrels inhabiting in that area? Why did I observe more squirrels compared to other species? Is that park favourable for squirrels ?

  1. Sounds like a great place for your research project. As you go through the next couple modules you should keep thinking through your questions and how you could test them and what you might measure.
