Ongoing Field observations

Day: 11-28-2023, Time:1450 MST

Located in Banff  National Park, Alberta. 51.16619°N, 115.56649°W   area is ~2km^2. Clear skies, slight overcast, -5℃ and 75% humidity. Early winter.

I will be studying the two main plants in the creek The soft plant and the rough plant. While studying the creek I noticed that the two different types of plants I am focusing on were decently dispersed. The soft weeds and rough weeds also seemed to be found in different parts of the creek and often did not overlap. It seemed that the soft plants grew in low-flow areas of the creek and the rough plant grew in high-flow areas. I hypothesize that the soft plants require a low flow rate to grow and the rough plants require a high flow rate to grow.  I predict that I will find only soft plants growing in low-flow areas of the creek and only rough plants in high-flow areas of the creek.

Response variable- The presence of  rough and soft plants (categorical)

Explanatory variable- water flow rate in the creek (continuous)

  1. What are soft plants and hard plants? Can you find out which species they are? Are you sure they are weeds?
How specifically will you define low and high flow areas of the creek, I am not sure what this means exactly. These are things I would address for your small assignment #2.
