Blog Post 1- Observations

I have selected my backyard to observe. The area is in Northern Calgary, Alberta (Coordinates- 51.1257087, -113.9535631). The area is usually warmer than other parts of Calgary. The backyard is approximately 2800 sq. ft. The backyard has a slope that goes up to the fence. The area does not have any trees but has ferns and shrubs. Most of the area is grassy. I took the observations on 27 November 2023 around 4:30 PM. The weather was partially cloudy during the fall-winter season.

The questions that arose in my mind during observation were

  1. Does the sunlight affect the growth of shrubs?
  2. How does water availability affect the grass?
  3. The affect of slope on the growth of ferns and shrubs?

  1. Hi, welcome to the field portion of the course. Backyards can definitely work though you have to ask appropriate questions for the space you have. I am unclear how you will ask questions about shrubs or ferns when your backyard is mostly grass….You will keep thinking through questions as you go through the next few modules.
