Blog post 1-observations

I have selected a portion of our yard to observe. It is just south of Winnipeg, Manitoba. Our overall yard is 14 acres but the portion behind my house is approximate 450 ft by 260 ft. The coordinates of the house is 49.75775 N, 97.12813 W. The yard is fairly flat with a gentle hill surrounding an area that dips and typically fills with water depending on the time of year, the Red River runs in the back yard, there is plenty of trees on either side of the selected land (North and South sides with lighter amounts of tree on the West side as the land is West facing)

Date visited: December 1, 2023

Time: 9:49am

Season: end of fall/beginning of winter

Temperature: -5 degrees C (with windchill -12 degrees C) cloudy

3 questions to form my research project:

  1. How does temperature effect deer count in the yard?
  2. What food does the yard provide for deer?
  3. Does snowfall decrease access to food for deer (approach to answering this may be whether deer are passing through or stopping to eat at times of increased snowfall)IMG_2491 2
