Theoretical Perspectives

My research study focuses on how the pollution rate can effect the seasonality of leaves, for example how this will effect how soon or how late they fall off, if certain regions or the trees lose their leaves before others. Then I will be looking at three relatively different locations vary in the leaf dispersal. The locations vary in the amount of pollution the trees are seeing, ranging from very large amounts to very small amounts. This years weather has been odd so it may be challenging to rely on the leaves falling since snow had fallen and now it has melted and temperatures are ranging above freezing. Because of this I will likely have to rely on previous studies.

From previous studies I know that air pollution can affect the chlorophyll levels of the leaves. This can help explain and aid my study showing that pollution does have an affect on plants and how they photosynthesize. This could lead to an increased rate of falling when the seasons change and the weather becomes colder, dryer, and darker.

It will also be interesting to see how the different biotic factors are affected by this pollution and change in the leaves, as many of them use the leaves as shelter or as a food source. Also the type of pollution may cause a difference in the leaf fall pattern and has fast or slow the trees lose them.

Key Words: Pollution, Leaves, Climatic Changes.

  1. I am still unclear how you will be able to say for sure that pollution is the cause of differences between your areas. I recommend focusing more generally on disturbed vs. undisturbed areas.
