The area I choose to study is Beach Estate Park. It is located on Vancouver Island’s southwest side of Departure Bay in Nanaimo in the Brecken Hill neighbourhood. The park is nearly 2 km out and back trail. A small river passes next to the trail leading into the ocean. There were 2 waterfalls on the trail.

On my first visit, I did see some ducks, shells, clams, seaweed and a few sea otters near the beach area. I did see the growth of fungi on the tree. The vegetation on the trail consisted of Oregan grape, Common Ivy, Western Swordfern and Coastal redwood tree.

Questions from my observations:

  1. Would I be able to see any observable changes in flora or wildlife inside the habitat restoration area throughout my research?
  2. Will the ocean water temperature affect the duck population in the area in the coming days?
  3. As per my research, I should see an increase in the number of ducks due to the migration from the north Canadian region.
  4. With the decrease in temperature in the upcoming visits, I am expecting to see a change in the population of the vegetation.

  1. Hello
contrasting two areas – a habitat restoration area and ‘other’ – can be a good way to find a predictive variable. What characteristics differentiate the two areas?
What effect are you trying to measure?
Don’t know that the vegetation will change per ‘population’, but the form of vegetation may change ; )
    thanks for the pics!
