Initial Field Observation: Investigating Leaf Length in Shaded vs. Non-Shaded Areas of Miscanthus in Daming Lake, Jinan
Location: Daming Lake, Jinan, China
Date: August 27-28, 2024
In this initial field study, I aimed to examine the impact of varying light conditions on the leaf length of Miscanthus at Daming Lake. The focus was on comparing two distinct environments: one where the plants were consistently shaded by trees and another in an open, fully sunlit area. The purpose of this comparison is to explore whether shading, which influences soil moisture levels, plays a significant role in affecting leaf size.
Characteristics of Study Areas
-
Shaded Area: The first study location was chosen beneath tree canopies, which provided consistent shade throughout the day. The soil here was expected to retain higher moisture due to reduced sunlight and evaporation.
-
Non-Shaded Area: The second area was in an open field with direct exposure to sunlight for most of the day. The soil in this area was expected to have lower moisture levels because of the continuous sunlight.
Hypothesis
It was hypothesized that the leaves of Miscanthus in the shaded area would be longer due to higher soil moisture levels, which promote more extensive leaf growth.
Prediction
I predicted that the leaves in the shaded area would be significantly larger compared to those in the non-shaded area. This difference is expected because soil moisture levels are higher in shaded environments, encouraging leaf elongation.
The primary response variable for this study is the leaf size, measured in terms of length. The predictor variable in this experiment is the soil moisture level, which is anticipated to differ between the shaded and non-shaded areas.
Your hypothesis should be more general and not related to your study area – in this case it should be about the influence of levels of sunlight on leaf growth in Miscanthus. Also, need more description of your study area which was missing in post 1 and your gradient which should be in this post.
