Post 1 Observations: Renfrew Ravine Park

The location I selected to observe for my research project is the northern end of the Renfrew Ravine Park (the Site) in East Vancouver. This blog post is based on my late August 2024 site visit on a sunny day that followed a few days of rain.

Topography: steep banks are present on the western and eastern sides of my Site with a small slow moving creek filled with large boulders at the bottom of the ravine. A wooden boardwalk is located along the east side of the creek and extends approximately 200 meters from 22nd avenue towards the south through the park.

Vegetation: vegetation is present in the ravine and includes a mixture of mature deciduous and coniferous trees and shrubs. Several invasive species were also noted including: blackberry and english ivy.

Three questions:

  1. Does the stream go dry in the summer (ephemeral stream?).
  2. Can the stream support salmonids?
  3. What percent of species are native vs invasive.

  1. Hi, sounds like a good study site. Remember for your questions to look for a gradient and ask what sort of gradient questions you could ask along the gradient.
