Location Description:
I chose to conduct my observation on the gardens at the Golden View Trail. Local residents frequently walk through the trail. I chose this area as this area is a 2-minute walk from where I live in Langley. I visited the trail in the evening at 5:30 pm and it was approximately 19 degrees Celsius. The area is approximately 45,000 sf and approximately only 600 ft long with a designated walking path which curves in a serpentine manner. The trail is a slow incline to the end with a maximum elevation gain of 65m (213 ft.). The screen shot in this journal shows the elevation in reverse and it was taken on the way back to the start.
The trail is not isolated and is exposed to townhouse development on the left side. The area is fenced off in order to start excavating. There is a man-made river that is still being created right side of the trail. Along the trail, on the left and right side of the road is filled with different species of plants. At first glance using an app to help me, I was able to verify the following species:
- Blueblossom
- Evergreen huckleberry
- Black chokeberry
- Stiff dogwood
- Snowberry
- Douglas-fir
- Western swordfern
- River birch
- Salal
- Red elderberry
- Balsam Poplar
- Silver maple
- Feather reed grass
The reason why this area interested me, apart from being accessible, is that there are patches of white mushrooms which are most likely shaggy manes and pale-spore mushrooms that are growing and does not look like they were planned. The other reason is that for an area near construction and a lot of foot traffic, there are a surprising amount of small rabbits that can be seen along the trail. I’ve also heard what I am assuming are frogs near the man-made river.
After walking through the trail, I was able to come up with three interesting questions:
- How does construction nearby, along with human traffic affect the local fauna and flora? What would the difference be over time?
- How do all the different flora and fauna in the trail coexist together? How do the mushrooms fit into this ecosystem?
- Would there be a difference of growth between the flora and fauna on the left side of the trail where there is ongoing construction development and the right side where there is a nearby forest?
